At Cedar Doodles, we are passionate about bringing beautiful, healthy Teddy Bear Mini Goldendoodle puppies into the world. Raising these wonderful companions begins with a well-planned breeding process and a deep understanding of the pregnancy and birth cycle. In this article, we will walk you through the reproductive journey of a Mini Goldendoodle, from the heat cycle to birth and early puppy care.
A female Mini Goldendoodle experiences a heat, or estrus, cycle roughly every six months. This cycle is divided into different phases, but the most critical for breeding is the fertile window. Cedar Doodles carefully tracks this period by testing hormone levels to determine the optimal breeding time.
One essential test we use is progesterone testing. Progesterone levels rise as the dog moves through her cycle, and by closely monitoring these levels, we can pinpoint the ideal time for artificial insemination (AI). AI is a precise breeding method used to ensure successful conception. Timing insemination correctly and spacing it out across optimal days is key to achieving a healthy litter size.
After a mini goldendoodle has been bred, her average gestation period is around 63 days. During the first few weeks, we observe for early signs of pregnancy, such as:
Pinker, more prominent nipples
Changes in appetite (increase or decrease)
Fatigue or increased rest periods
At approximately 30 days, Cedar Doodles performs an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. This allows us to see the tiny puppies developing within their individual sacs, check for heartbeats, and estimate the litter size.
As the due date approaches, we closely monitor the mother’s temperature daily. A drop in temperature often signals that labor is imminent. Other signs that labor is near include:
Refusing food
Seeking more attention
Restlessness or nesting behavior
To ensure a smooth birthing process, Cedar Doodles prepares a quiet, comfortable nesting area. This whelping space mimics the den environment that dogs instinctively seek in the wild.
Once labor begins, the mother will settle into her whelping area and focus on delivering her puppies. The first puppy usually arrives within a few hours of active labor. Between deliveries, the mother will clean her puppies and may eat the placenta, which is a natural instinct to keep the area clean.
It is vital to maintain a clean, warm environment during this time. The whelping area should be kept at a temperature of around 85-90°F for the first week to ensure the puppies do not get too cold. Cedar Doodles also takes daily weight measurements to confirm that each puppy is growing properly.
Newborn puppies spend most of their time sleeping, often up to 22 hours per day. A happy, healthy puppy is quiet and content. Crying can indicate that they are cold or hungry. Keeping the environment warm, clean, and ensuring the mother has proper nutrition and care are essential steps during this stage.
This is just a glimpse into the whelping cycle of Mini Goldendoodles. Stay tuned for more insights into raising these adorable, family-friendly companions!
